Using the OSHA database on IRE’s website, I worked on the data portion of this Sunday A1 story about the dangerous work of cleaning industrial tanks. Starting with two Texas companies, I went through the OSHA database and identified companies in this tank cleaning sub-industry across multiple NAICS codes. At the end of my work, I gave the reporter a spreadsheet with companies, specific workplace accidents and summary statistics. He ran with those leads to proceed a fantastic feature story.

In order to put the West Fertilizer fine in context after it was announced, we looked at the 56,800 fatality and catastrophe investigations conducted by OSHA since 2001.
This was a quick turnaround when the U.S. Census Bureau released its 2012 1-year estimate American Community Survey data. While there are lots of interesting topics in the ACS data, we focused on healthcare coverage in Texas. Three of the four counties in the country with the highest percentage of uninsured residents are in Texas.
